Gasgoo.com (Shanghai January 24) - Shanghai's first automobile registration plate meant exclusively for a new energy vehicle was printed and issued in the city's Pudong district earlier this week, China Business News reported today. The 125 yuan ($19.92) plate, which carries the number D-Z0800, is to be used with a white Roewe E50 pure electric.
The plate is the first of a series to be used exclusively for new electric vehicles. The plates are near free, with buyers only having to pay negligible frees, and are part of city policies aimed to encourage new energy vehicle purchases.
Shanghai announced the new policies to stimulate new energy vehicle growth late last December. In addition to providing low cost registration plates, the policies also allow for various regional and national subsidies on the purchases of certified new energy vehicles. For example, when purchasing a new SAIC Roewe E50 pure electric, a consumer can apply for subsidies totaling 97,000 yuan (15,461), slashing the car's final price from 234,900 yuan ($37,442) to 140,900 yuan ($22,459).
