Steps being taken to improve new energy vehicle charging infrastructure in China

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai January 20) - New energy vehicle charging infrastructure is still very lacking in China. However, major steps are being taken to change this situation. This month, Stage Grid has begun setting up 50 charging stations along the G2 Beijing-Shanghai Expressway. Every 50 km drivers of new energy vehicles will have a chance to charge up their vehicles when driving down the 1,262 km motorway. Each station will be equipped with four 120kW charging machines and eight smaller charging posts.

State Grid is not the only organization aiming to develop China’s lacking infrastructure. According to a report appearing in 21st Century Observer News today, electric vehicle infrastructure provider STGCON is near to opening its first new energy vehicle charging station in Beijing. The company opened its first charging station in Shanghai last November.

“In 2015, we plan to build 100 ultra-efficient charging stations in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen,” STGCON President Pang Lei stated. By taking advantage of this fledgling market as soon as possible, companies like STGCON look to benefit massively in the future as new energy vehicle sales in China continue to grow year after year. This has been a major factor drawing in new investors.

However, China’s new energy vehicle market still has quite a long way to go to. According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, a total of 74,800 new energy vehicles were sold in the country in 2014, slightly less than the 78,500 new energy vehicles produced. There are still less than 100,000 new energy vehicles on Chinese roads. Whether or not improving infrastructure will revitalize the market still remains to be seen.
