Toyota recalls 20000 cars over brakes

Jiji Press - Toyota Motor Corp. told the nation’s transport ministry Wednesday that it is recalling about 20,000 cars due to a flaw in equipment that automatically applies the brakes if obstacles are detected.

Four models are subject to the recall, including the Crown and the Lexus IS300h, manufactured between December 2012 and June 2013. The recall includes vehicles that have not been delivered.

In May, a Toyota car was hit from behind due to the unexpected operation of the precrash safety system, the ministry said.

The accident stemmed from inappropriate programming, which may cause the equipment to be set off by radio waves emitted by a nearby vehicle.
