Reuters - Toyota Motor, the maker of Prius hybrid cars, will begin building low-emission cars and their components in China, the carmaker's president said.
In a speech at the Shanghai Motor Show, Toyota President Akio Toyoda said his company wanted to produce environmentally friendly vehicles and components in China.
"We want to introduce all our environmental technologies to China," Toyoda said, according a copy of his speech.
In China, the world's largest car market by volume, Toyota lags other big automakers including Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE). Building cars such as hybrids there may help it catch up in Asia's biggest economy.
In Japan, output of Prius cars and other models has been hampered by a disruption in parts supplies following Japan's March earthquake and tsunami.
In March, Toyota said it would delay the launch in Japan of two new additions to the Prius line-up, a wagon and a minivan, from the originally planned end-April because of the halt in output.
