Gasgoo.com (Shanghai April 1) - Volkswagen's Chinese branch announced that VW's first global electric vehicle fleet will be making its debut in the country, the Nanfang Daily reported today. The cars will make rounds near the National Museum located in central Beijing.

According to VW, the fleet will be composed of three Golf pure electrics and ten Touareg hybrids. The vehicles will be providing free transportation for museum visitors. VW believes that the event will be of great importance as it looks to further develop in the new energy market, as it looks to allow consumers from across the world to experience the manufacturer's electric vehicles first-hand.

"Volkswagen believes that electric vehicle technology is the correct direction for [the industry] to develop," said Karl-Thomas Neumann, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group (China). "Our goal is to become the world's leading company in electric vehicles by 2018, [as well as] developing affordable electric cars for the Chinese market," he added. Dr. Neumann said that by offering transportation for museum visitors, VW hopes to demonstrate to Chinese consumers its commitment to environmental protection and clean traffic.

The fleet is rumored to be shown off in seven other Chinese cities in September of this year.
