Zurich Gives Green Light to Robotaxis, WeRide and Uber Enter Second European City

Edited by Greg From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- On June 17, WeRide and Uber are planning to launch a commercial Robotaxi service in Zurich, Switzerland. The move marks the duo’s second European city for Robotaxi deployment, following Madrid, Spain, as WeRide rapidly scales its commercial footprint across the continent.

Backed by the Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), the Zurich service is slated to launch later this year. Once regulatory clearance comes through, locals will be able to hail a WeRide autonomous ride straight from the Uber app.

Switzerland boasts one of Europe’s most mature regulatory frameworks for autonomous driving. Its open policy environment, paired with its status as a premium global mobility market, offers fertile ground for scaling Robotaxi operations.

WeRide already holds an early lead in Switzerland’s autonomous commercial landscape. In January 2025, a WeRide Robobus rolled out at Zurich Airport—marking Europe’s first autonomous deployment in an airport setting—and has since started commercial operations without a safety driver up front. In November 2025, WeRide secured Switzerland’s first fully driverless license for its Robotaxi, partnering with the Swiss Public Transport Laboratory (STL) and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to advance trial operations and cement its first-mover edge.

Looking ahead, WeRide and Uber plan to gradually grow the fleet in step with regulatory nods and operational performance—eventually extending fully driverless commercial rides into downtown Zurich.

The Zurich rollout stays true to WeRide’s asset-light playbook. By teaming up with local partners that can fund and run the fleets, the company sharpens its deployment efficiency. For this project, local mobility and logistics operator Rydera will handle day-to-day fleet management.

The latest expansion builds on a well-honed partnership between WeRide and Uber. Since December 2024, the two have rolled out Robotaxi services across several Middle Eastern cities—launching fully driverless commercial operations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and kicking off public rides in Riyadh. That track record is now smoothing the path for deeper European penetration.

Powered by its proprietary autonomous driving platform, WeRide One, and its world model, WeRide GENESIS, the company can draw on a deep well of global tech and operational know-how—ensuring the Zurich service runs with the same stability and consistency as its other deployments.

With Zurich coming online, WeRide and Uber have now activated 5 of the 15 international cities covered under their partnership. The ultimate goal: deploy tens of thousands of robotaxis worldwide, accelerating the global push for safe and reliable autonomous mobility.
