Hatchback sales in China topped 700,000 units
Statistics shows that hatchback sales in China in 2006 topped 700,000 units, six times more comparing with a 100,000 sales in 2001, while sedan sales in 2005 and 2001 were 2,787,400 and 21,500 units respectively. The growth rates of sedans are lower than that of hatchbacks, over the next two or three years, sales of hatchbacks are forecasted to exceed that of sedans.
In addition, hatchback buyers are mostly concentrated in downtown areas or provincial capitals, where market shares of hatchbacks account for nearly 40% of the total, in certain regions this percentage even go as high as 80%.
Another reason for growth is that most models feature more advanced equipment, roomy interior and a longer wheelbase, like Fukang, Xiali, Alto, Excelle HRV, Fit, POLO, Peugeot206, Tiida hatchback, Focus hatchback, Elantra hatchback, etc, which greatly promote the overall sales in general.
