The new product is touted by the company as the world's first mass-produced magnesium alloy case for electric drive system to adopt semi-solid processing technique. It is made from AZ91D magnesium alloy, weighing just 13.7 kg.

During the launch event, Mr. Wang Jian, the Executive Director of the Drive System Hardware Department at SAIC Motor R&D Innovation Headquarters, emphasized that the introduction of this product signifies a new milestone in SAIC's ongoing efforts to develop and apply magnesium alloy lightweight materials. He said this achievement is a testament to SAIC's unwavering commitment to pursuing high performance, lightweight, and environmentally friendly solutions. The semi-solid processing technique not only resolves key challenges in magnesium alloy material processing, but also significantly enhances its strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance, making it feasible for large-scale production in the NEV (new energy vehicle) sector.

The volume production of the second-generation case marks a leap forward for magnesium alloy as a lightweight material, introducing semi-solid technology into NEV electric drive systems for the first time. This advancement not only boosts vehicle lightweighting but also sets new benchmarks in sustainable manufacturing.

SAIC Motor said the second-generation magnesium alloy case will significantly accelerate the lightweighting process of NEVs, contributing substantially to achieveing the global carbon neutrality goal. Besides, this innovation will also lead the development of the entire magnesium alloy industry chain and further solidify China’s leadership in global magnesium material R&D and applications.

Compared to traditional high-pressure die-casting processing technique for magnesium alloys, the semi-solid processing technique improves the material's flowability by controlling the process parameters during solidification, which results in uniform, fine spherical phases that enhance the casting quality. The new technique also significantly improves the mechanical properties, elongation, and density of the castings. Additionally, the innovation eliminates the need for protective gases, substantially reducing energy consumption during manufacturing and aligning with green manufacturing principles.

As far back as 2022, the IM L7, the first model from SAIC Motor's premium EV brand IM Motors, was officially put onto the market. Its electric drive system was encased in a magnesium alloy case, marking the inaugural application of such component.
