SAIC-GM-Wuling signs MoU on investment in battery-based EV project in Indonesia

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- SAIC-GM-Wuling (“SGMW”), General Motors' joint venture with Chinese partners SAIC Motor and Guangxi Automobile Group, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) a few days ago with the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, as part of its efforts to strengthen its commitment to developing the battery-based electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.

The MoU was signed for the investment in Wuling’s new KBLBB (Battery-Based Electric Vehicles) project in the country. At the signing ceremony, SGMW also delivered 50 Air EVs as official vehicles for the ASEAN Summit 2023 to the Indonesian government.

"This is a new milestone in Wuling's journey to support the acceleration of vehicle electrification launched by the Indonesian government. The signing of an MoU with the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the handover of electric car batteries produced in collaboration with Gotion Hi-Tech is certainly a real commitment of Wuling to developing the ecosystem and battery-based electric motor vehicle industry from upstream to downstream," said Shi Guoyong, President Director of Wuling Motors.

As the largest economy in the ASEAN region, Indonesia has a population of nearly 280 million. As the first Chinese automaker to invest and build factories in Indonesia, SGMW has invested there over 1 billion US dollars since 2015, and has built a complete vehicle manufacturing factory, a parts supplier park, and over 140 sales and service outlets. In 2022, Indonesia's total auto sales reached 1.048 million units, over 30,000 units of which were sold by PT SGMW Motor Indonesia.

The Air EV, officially launched in Indonesia in August 2022, is highly favored by local consumers in Indonesia, with its cumulative local sales exceeding 8,600 units so far, said SGMW.
