Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - The Chinese SUV market has continued to achieve rapid growth over the first six months of the year. According to Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 2.71 million SUVs were sold in the country from January to June, representing positive year-on-year growth of 48%. In particular, own brands’ were able to see their sales nearly double, growing 95.5%. By comparison, sales of foreign brand SUVs only increased 15.5%. A total of 1.25 million foreign brand SUVs, accounting for 46.4% of all SUVs sold in the country over the first half of the year, down 13 percentage points from the previous year.

The segment has been attributed with driving growth for the market as a whole. According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), the small SUV market grew 168.9% over the first half of the year. A total of 812,100 small SUVs were sold from January to June of this year, compared to 302,100 units sold over the first half of last year. The small SUV segment’s stake in the overall SUV market increased 13.5 percentage points.

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - SUV sales in China have been the major driver of growth for the passenger automotive market. Despite a decline in passenger automobile sales this year, the SUV segment’s performance has continued to remain strong. According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 9.53 million passenger automobiles have been sold over the first half of the year. The figure represents slight positive growth of 7.4%, far less than the double digit rates from previous years. 2.71 million of those sales were of SUVs, up a full 48.0% from last year. By comparison, minivan sales increased 16.8% while sedan sales fell 6.0%.
