China new energy vehicle market, BYD battery business, BYD battery capacity

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Li Qin, board secretary of BYD, said on December 9 that the company has started to sell its battery products to other companies. The company’s battery products had been for in-house needs for a long time.

According to Li, BYD Company Limited will expand its sales business in the coming years. And with good sales performance, the company may split its battery business from the whole group.

Currently, BYD has been expanding its production capacity of power battery. According to the data released by the company in November, the company’s total power battery production capacity will reach 16 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by the end of this year. Its lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery production will be up to 10 GWh while the rest is NMC/NCA battery. Besides, the company plans to add another 10 GWh NMC/NCA battery and the total expected capacity will be up to 26 GWh.

In May this year, it is said that BYD had spun off its battery business and the decision has been implemented inside the company, which means the company will abandon its vertical production and sales mode and that it will supply battery products to the whole new energy vehicle market.
