Volkswagen starts locally producing core electrified parts at Tianjin transmission factory

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Volkswagen Group China announced on June 20 that it has kicked off the local production of two key NEV power components—APP290 E-drive and DQ400e hybrid transmission in the factory operated by Volkswagen Automatic Transmission (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. (VWATJ).

"The local production of NEV components is a key milestone for the Volkswagen Group's e-mobility strategy," said Dr. Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China, “It signifies that we are striving to fulfill our commitment to the future all-round electrification by offering the most advanced NEV products.”

According to the automaker, DQ400e transmissions will be installed in the existing models of the Passat PHEV, the Tiguan L PHEV and the yet-to-be-launched Tayron GTE and the Magotan GTE, etc. Besides, the APP290 E-Drives are set to be used in BEV versions of the Bora, the Golf, the Lavida, the Audi Q2L e-tron and the MQB-based Skoda-branded BEVs. Both components feature a respective annual capacity of 180,000 units.

Moreover, VWATJ plans to mass produce the MEB platform-based APP310 E-Drives and the DQ501 transmissions in September and October next year with predicted yearly capacity of 330,000 units and 450,000 units respectively. The APP310 E-Drives are set to be used for I.D. Family electric models in the first place.

Frank Engel, executive vice president of Volkswagen Group China said that Volkswagen is ambitious to hand over 400,000 NEVs in China by 2020 and increase the number to 1.5 million units by 2025. What's more, it aims to deliver 22 million BEVs worldwide by 2028, more than half of which will be produced by the group's EV platforms in China.
