Beijing Automobile works was established in 1958, which was the second automaker in China at that time. Then it was incorporated with Beijing Motorcycle Works in 1987 to form Beijing Automobile and Motorcycle United Company (BAM). In 2001, based on the latest organization model, it merged with Beijing auto assembly plant to form Beijing Automobile Works Co., Ltd (BAW).

The company, which has a long history of manufacturing light off-road vehicles and trucks, is now considered as one of the important automakers in Beijing. Its business scope includes: developing, producing and selling light off-road vehicles, trucks, and other special vehicles.

BAW, headquartering in Chaoyang district, Beijing, has two separate plants, one in Chaoyang district,the other in Shunyi district. The capacity is about 100,000 units per year. Her comprehensive distribution and service networks cover the whole Chinese market, including every provinces, cities and municipalities.

Till now, BAW has more than 150 different models vehicles including off-road vehicle/sport utility vehicle, commercial vehicles and special vehicles. Domestic and foreign customers and Chinese army use these products. Especially the amphicar, the special vehicles, which is developed by BAW, is for military customers to enhance Chinese army. There are three different models, 0.5t, 0.75t and 1t.

BAW has set up the quality control system, and has passed ISO9001-2000, the civilian quality limits and GJB9001-2000, the military quality limits.

Guided by the market, BAW has already changed the management conception, carried out the structure reform and organized a high efficiency manager group. After the success in planned economy and the challenge in market economy, BAW is ready for the new market.

The goal of BAW is to develop the quality and service by taking the lasted management and technology, so as to restore off-road vehicle culture and make its name on light truck market. 

BAIC now has established a joint venture partnership with DaimlerChrysler to produce Benz and earlier  Jeep.
