Gasgoo Munich- On October 22, Mobileye secured the first automatic emergency braking (AEB) development inspection certificate issued by safety authority TÜV SÜD. An independent audit by TÜV SÜD confirmed that Mobileye's AEB development process complies with ISO 21448, the international standard for the safety of the intended functionality of road vehicles.

The audit encompassed Mobileye's AEB development process, along with control measures designed to identify, assess, and mitigate related risks. Its scope addressed hazards that can arise even when the system functions as designed — including the inherent limitations of sensors and perception systems — as well as the real-world conditions in which advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) operate.
Designed to mitigate or avoid certain frontal collisions by alerting the driver and braking when necessary, the AEB function must recognize various road users, obstacles, and driving environments. Its safety relies not only on eliminating hardware and software faults but also on a structured control scheme for the system's intended functionality. Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF) complements functional safety by focusing on hazards caused by performance limitations or reasonably foreseeable misuse.
Almog Shany, Mobileye's chief safety officer, noted that the independent verification examined reproducible processes, systematic risk assessment, and clearly defined safety engineering responsibilities. The inspection certificate issued by TÜV SÜD provides third-party validation that Mobileye's development process meets ISO 21448 requirements — underscoring its rigor.
While this assessment focused on Mobileye's AEB development process, the underlying safety protocols reviewed are integral to its broader driver-assistance and autonomous vehicle technology development. Previously, TÜV SÜD had recommended Mobileye's safety management system for SAE Level 4 autonomous driving — a framework encompassing the safety management of autonomous vehicles equipped with the Mobileye Drive system.
