Chip shortage could delay GAC Honda's factory restart

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- According to the latest information, Honda’s plan to restart production at its China joint-venture plants is being delayed again. The three plants of GAC Honda, Honda’s venture with GAC Group, were slated to resume output on Jan 5; the target has now been moved to Jan 19. That means the shutdowns will last longer.

Gasgoo contacted GAC Honda, which said "hasn't received definitive information yet".

GAC Honda’s suspension was originally scheduled for Dec 29, 2025 to Jan 2, 2026 — five days. However, with semiconductor supplies running short, the restart date was pushed to Jan 16 and has now been postponed further. Honda said a full return to normal production is expected after the 19th.

Meanwhile, Honda also halted production in Japan for two days on Jan 5–6. The company said that with key supplier Nexperia pausing shipments, chip inventories remain tight. To keep production stable, it is actively seeking alternative sourcing.

Disruptions stemming from the chip shortage have already led Honda to trim output of some core models in North America since late October last year. Honda expects the shortage to dent operating profit by about 150 billion yen in the fiscal year ending March 2026.

For now, production continues at Dongfeng Honda, the company’s other China joint venture.
