Gasgoo.com (Shanghai September 3) - The much awaited Fifth National Emission Standards will be announced before the end of the year, Beijing News reported today, citing a statement made by Wang Kaiyu, head of the Ministry of Environmental Protection's Department of Science, Technology and Standards. The standards will firsts be implemented in key cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

At this year's International Forum on Chinese Automotive Industry Development, Ms. Wang pointed out that carbon dioxide emissions increased 5.73 percent last year, signifying that the country was unable to meet the standards outlined by the Eleventh Five-Year Guideline economic directive. Pollution rates in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, as well as in the Yangtze River and Pearl River Deltas, are especially severe. According to Ms. Wang, heavy diesel vehicles are responsible for 60 percent of all passenger automobile carbon dioxide emissions and 94.5 percent of particulate matter emissions. She added that research work on the Sixth National Emission Standards will begin next year.
