June 24, 2010, Shanghai –Better Light, Better Life – Philips Green Solutions for Automotive Lighting Innovation Forum was held in Shanghai today. A series of Philips leading edge automotive applications, which satisfy the needs of future automotive lighting, were displayed during the forum. Furthermore, Mr. Dominiek Plancke, global president of Philips Automotive Lighting, came to the forum, and launched the automotive forward lighting applications with the latest LUXEON® Altilon technology and future Xenon 25W. These innovative products represent Philips latest R&D achievements in developing energy-saving and high-performance solutions.
Philips launches latest LED & HID automotive forward lighting applications
Hundreds of engineers from the automobile manufacturers and spare parts suppliers all over the country attended the innovative forum. Inspired by the speech themed Better Light Better Life by Mr. John Peek, CTO of Philips Automotive Lighting, the participants proposed some possible solutions for future automotive lighting, and had an in-depth discussion about the LED applications in automobile industry.

LUXEON® Altilon
High-power automotive forward lighting LED
LUXEON® Altilon is Philips’ high-power automotive forward lighting LED, delivering distinctive brilliant white light for the automotive forward lighting. LUXEON® Altilon is designed and tested to withstand extreme temperatures and engineered to simplify optical design and ease manufacturing and assembly. The advanced package, with its large thermal footprint, reduces thermal management engineering for high and low beam forward lighting, daytime running lights, static bending lights, and position lamps.
Using Philips Lumileds’ Thin Film Flip Chip die to deliver superior performance, and with more than 850 lumens and 60 MNits of light output at 1A, LUXEON® Altilon is the brightest and most efficient LED solution available, and is AEC-Q101C qualified. Its small size, high brightness, and lower energy consumption make LUXEON Altilon a perfect choice for the next generation of advanced forward lighting solutions, high and low beam applications, daytime running lamps, static bending lamps and position lamps. LUXEON Altilon enables the automotive customers to provide forward lighting solutions that deliver never before possible performance and features while at the same time provide unique visual identities for their vehicle brands.
The world’s first all-LED headlamp is equipped on Audi R8, and LUXEON Altilon has been implemented for low and high beam functions, which requires highest technologies and quality. The low beam is composed of three sets of 1x2 chip, while the high beam is composed of two sets of 1x4 chip. With advanced technologies, LUXEON Altilon has made great breakthrough in luminance performance, package design and long lifetime stability, and has resolved those problems in former high-performing LED automotive headlamps, such as insufficient brightness, unstable color control, complex in thermal management, and insecure durability. Future 25W Xenon
Lighting system is regarded as the key factor of automobile active safety system. Philips Future 25W Xenon headlamp system reduces complexity, weight and energy consumption, while performance is greatly improved compared with the traditional halogen 55W bulbs. Philips innovatively integrates ballast, cable and bulb into just one component, and reduces the mandatory headlamp washing system, so as to greatly reduce complexity of the xenon headlamp. This innovative solution can save more energy than not only halogen lamps, but former xenon lamps as well.
Currently, xenon lamps are mainly reserved for costly vehicles, such as Audi and BMW.
