BYD Donates 10 Million Yuan to Aid Disaster Area in Gyirong County, Xizang

Edited by Betty From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- On Aug. 27, the BYD Charity Foundation announced a 10 million yuan cash donation to the China Charity Federation. The funds will support emergency rescue, transitional resettlement, and post-disaster reconstruction in Gyirong County, Xigazê, Xizang. As the Gyirong area remains in a critical search-and-rescue phase, sustained support from the private sector and society at large is set to serve as a vital complement to official government operations.

The disaster struck at around 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 26. A landslide on the Nepalese side severely impacted the Gyirong Port in Xizang, severing roads, communications, and power lines, while burying several structures. In response, the National Disaster Reduction and Relief Commission and the Ministry of Emergency Management activated a Level II national emergency response, deploying firefighters and engineering rescue teams to the scene.

As of 8 a.m. on Aug. 27, official figures put the death toll at three, with 558 others missing—including 260 foreign nationals—while two villagers have been rescued. Meanwhile, a barrier lake has formed near the Gyirong Port. With rain still threatening the area, the risk of secondary disasters is mounting, complicating on-site search efforts and evacuations.

National relief resources are rapidly converging on the region. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management have urgently pre-disbursed 120 million yuan in central disaster relief funds. Separately, the National Development and Reform Commission has allocated 100 million yuan in central budgetary investment for emergency infrastructure restoration, while central authorities have dispatched 30,000 relief items.

Against this backdrop, BYD's 10 million yuan donation underscores the rapid response capabilities of major corporations during crises. Unlike mere brand posturing, cash infusions provide flexible resources for rescue operations, resettlement, and long-term reconstruction. Yet, with the disaster zone still in the critical phase of search and risk assessment, the ultimate impact of corporate aid will hinge on how efficiently funds are deployed and how well they match on-the-ground needs.

In recent years, automaker participation in public disaster relief has become a staple of corporate social responsibility. For a top-tier player like BYD, however, the donation is merely the starting line. In the face of catastrophe, the spotlight is on whether companies can sustainably convert capital, vehicles, energy solutions, and supply chain resources into tangible rescue power. BYD has pledged to monitor the situation closely. For Gyirong, the immediate priority remains a race against time to locate the missing and mitigate further damage from secondary disasters.
