The deputy director of one of the Chinese government’s top think tanks has called for automakers to shift their focus to environmentally friendly and energy saving targets.

Liu Shijin wants automakers to stop thinking merely about output capacity and to instead focus on green technologies as well as strengthening their safety and quality control standards.

Sales of domestically manufactured automobiles rose by 36 per cent year on year in September with lower priced cars becoming more affordable according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

However, while the expansion has prompted an industrial boom and boosted domestic demand it has also triggered concerns about the country’s energy capacity, pollution levels and traffic jams. Liu believes that the social problems arising from the country’s industrial boom has made its future development unsustainable, which is proving a real test for the government.
