Gasgoo.com (Shanghai May 16) - The national Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) announced that they will be conducting a recall of imported Jeep Wranglers starting June 1, China Business News reported today. The recall will be conducted due to flaws in the transmission system. According to the AQSIQ, 8,309 Wranglers manufactured between 2008 and 2011 located in the mainland will be targeted for recall.
The recall comes only a little over a month after a similar order was issued temporarily halting the import of Wranglers. Jeep's parent company Chrysler has not issued a response to either that order or the current recall.
With instances of imported Wranglers self-imploding being recorded since 2007, many within the industry see the AQSIQ's current decision to order a recall as relatively lenient. However, the previous order to halt imports is still causing a lot of damage to Chrysler, as it effectively denies them any chance to expand their market share. There is also speculation that AQSIQ is being generous to Chrysler as a result of their current market situation.
Chrysler will undertake free maintenance and repair of the affected vehicles, as well as informing owners of the specifics of the problem. Chrysler will also provide technical long-term support for the Wranglers.
