Gasgoo.com (Shanghai September 15) - The much awaited Guangqi Fiat Viaggio made its market debut at the Italy Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo earlier this week. According to a report appearing on autohome.com.cn, the Viaggio carries a manufacturer's suggested retail price of 108,800 yuan to 158,800 yuan ($17,214-$25,125), and is available in six different variations.
The Viaggio (pictured) is not the first Chinese-made Fiat, as the manufacturer was previously active in China a few years ago. However, the compact is the first model of the new joint venture between the Italian manufacturer and GAC Group. As Guangqi Fiat's first model, the Viaggio is crucial to the JV's success. Therefore, the JV has spent a considerable amount of time conduction localization development to ensure that the vehicle is geared towards Chinese consumers. At the same time, Fiat's has set up a factory in Hunan's capital of Changsha, which boasts a quarterly production capacity of 140,000 automobiles, in order to ensure there are no problems with limited supply.
The Viaggio made its debut at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition this April. The compact, along with its sister models the Alfa-Romeo Giulietta and Dodge Dart, is based on Fiat's CUSW platform. The Viaggio's basic design is based off the Dart, albeit with a redesigned fascia and rear. The Viaggio measures 4.68 m long, 1.85 m wide and 1.47 m tall, with a wheelbase of 2.71 m. The hefty measurements ensure that the interior is quite spacious, which is a big selling point in China. Worth mentioning is that the Fiat uses an independent McPherson front suspension and rigid torsion beam rear suspension, while the Dart employs a multi-link independent suspension.
The Viaggio's interior design is also similar to the Dart's, with the most noticeable difference being the steering wheel. A very large 8.4 inch LCD screen is notably situated in the central control deck. Sumptuous Nappa leather seats give the Viaggio a sense of luxury.
The car comes with electronic stability control, steering assist for high-altitude driving and other features as standard.
The Viaggio is powered by a turbocharged 1.4 L engine, which is available in two different variations. The standard version boasts a maximum horsepower of 120 hp and can produce up to 206 Nm of torque, while the advanced version can output up to 150 hp and produce a maximum of 230 Nm of torque. Both five-speed manual and six-speed dual clutch transmission options are available.
The Viaggio is entering an extremely competitive market, and has its fair share of rivals, including the new Ford Focus, Dongfeng Honda Civic and Shanghai GM Chevrolet Cruze. Although the Viaggio's technical specifications and options are on par with its competitors, whether or not Guangqi Fiat will be able to build brand awareness and gain consumer trust remains to be seen.
