Honda has announced that when the LA Auto Show opens on November 17th, the world will be introduced to a new Honda electric vehicle alongside a new plug-in hybrid. Along with the FCX Clarity, Honda plans to use the 2010 LA Auto Show to display their commitment to alternative power vehicles.
Honda has provided no additional information about their new electric concept or plug-in hybrid so we don’t know exactly what they will unveil but with the introduction of the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt to the US market; don’t be surprised if the two new vehicles are production-friendly.
Honda needs an electric vehicle to keep up with the industry
The 2011 Chevy Volt is so unique because of the layout of the Voltec drivetrain, with an electric engine driving the wheels while an on-board generator (they call it a range extender) keeps the electric system powered up. There is no other affordable competition for the Volt with this type of technology but it is only a matter of time before other automakers offer up their own rendition of this system.
Perhaps the people at Honda have been sitting back, waiting to see how the Leaf and Volt are received by the American consumer market before unveiling their ace-in-the-hole, but will it be a traditional electric car like the Leaf or will we see an extended-range vehicle like the Chevy Volt?
We will know in 20 days… stay tuned.
