Gasgoo Munich- On June 25, Pu Yang, FIREFLY's marketing head, announced that internal testing began at the first batch of NIO's fifth-generation swap stations. The test covers Shanghai, Beijing, Hefei, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Kunshan.
Many users have been closely tracking the progress of FIREFLY's battery swap compatibility, eager to see the model integrated into NIO's established network. In response to this demand, the brand has clarified why this round of testing is essential.
The fifth-generation stations are designed to accommodate multiple NIO models, but the significant disparity between two representative vehicles poses a major calibration challenge. The ES9 spans 5.3 meters in length, while the firefly measures just 4.03 meters. The two differ markedly in exterior dimensions, wheelbase layout, and battery pack hardware specifications.

Enabling two vastly different vehicle sizes to share a single swapping mechanism requires extensive real-world calibration. This is necessary to eliminate risks such as positioning errors, lifting mismatches, and battery connection issues. As a result, regular swap services cannot be opened immediately.
The primary objective of this internal test is to gather sufficient operational data in real-world scenarios, comprehensively verifying the stability and reliability of the entire swapping process. Technicians will continuously optimize software and mechanical logic based on collected data. The goal is to bring the FIREFLY's swapping fluidity and operational smoothness on par with existing NIO models, ensuring a consistent, seamless experience for users without anomalies.
From an infrastructure perspective, this compatibility test pushes the boundaries of the fifth-generation stations. A single site will soon serve both large flagship SUVs and compact city cars, improving asset utilization. It also accumulates debugging experience for future NIO models to join the network, refining the overall compatibility of the energy replenishment ecosystem.
NIO also outlined its future business cadence. Moving forward, the brand will release monthly updates on its battery swap operations, covering new developments in site construction, model compatibility, and technology upgrades.
