This protection device merges active system-triggered protection with passive current-driven safeguards into a single solution. It is designed to deliver reliable, redundant fault protection for electrification applications while enabling faster response times and simplified system-level design.

The STPS500P series is engineered to address the limitations of traditional circuit protection and the growing complexity of modern high-voltage vehicle architectures. Its applications span vehicles, commercial transport, charging infrastructure, and industrial electrification systems.
As electrification systems climb in voltage and complexity, automakers often face a trade-off between active protection—reliant on system signals—and passive schemes that respond only to current or heat. Sensata’s new fuse bridges this gap by integrating system-triggered pyrotechnic protection with current-driven passive safeguards in a single device. This "dual-trigger" architecture offers redundancy at the component level, ensuring reliable circuit breaking even if upstream electronics or sensors fail.
Unlike passive solutions that rely on thermal melting, this fuse uses a direct current drive mechanism to break circuits in milliseconds—a response speed independent of the current level. Sensata notes this capability allows for pre-emptive protection before contactors, busbars, and downstream components sustain damage. Faster breaking also reduces the short-circuit tolerance requirements for contactors, helping automakers simplify high-voltage architectures, cut component counts, and optimize both cost and complexity.
