Toyota has sold over 2.5 million of hybrids in 13 years of producing this kind of vehicles. Prius is the most successful hybrid of the Japanese automaker, representing 70% of sales.
The Japanese celebrate the Toyota hybrid sales of 2.5 million at worldwide. In 2010, the guys from Toyota has sold, on average, about 2,000 units per day, with one third more than in 2009. Prius has sold in 1.8 million copies, representing about 70% of Toyota hybrids sold at worldwide.
In the second place comes the Toyota Camry, a model which has sold in 200,000 copies. The increased sales of the Toyota is achieved thanks to the launch of the third generation of the Prius in the spring of 2009 and entry into production of the Camry Hybrid in Australia and China.
The goal of those from Toyota is to selling one million hybrids on a year in as little time as possible. By the end of this decade, Toyota believes that people can achieve this performance. Also, Toyota wants to offer a hybrid version of each model from 2020. Therefore, each model of the Japanese automaker range could benefit from a hybrid version of the next decade.
The first generation of the Prius began in 1997 in Japan. The exports of this model began three years later in 2000. The first generation was sold until 2001. The guys from Toyota have produced this model at a loss, since the cost of production of a copy was $32,000, and the price in Japan at that time was equivalent of $16,929.
The Toyota directors felt that such models will represent one third of the international automotive market in 2005. Between 2000 and 2003, Toyota produced a version of Prius yet, which was intended for the global market since its debut. The second generation of the Prius began in 2004 and remained on sale until 2009, when he was replaced by the third generation of this model.
