Gasgoo Munich-On June 2, WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD, HKEX: 0800) and Uber (NYSE: UBER) announced plans to launch Spain's first commercial Robotaxi pilot service in Madrid. This marks the duo's first joint entry into Europe, with Madrid becoming the 12th city globally to host WeRide's Robotaxi operations.

Since its inception in 2017, WeRide has established a presence in key overseas markets including Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, and Zurich in Switzerland, alongside its operations in Guangzhou and Beijing. The expansion into Madrid further broadens the global footprint of its Robotaxi business.

Backed by the regional government of Madrid, the commercial service is slated to launch within the year. Local users will be able to hail a WeRide Robotaxi with a single tap on the Uber app. Initially, vehicles will carry professionally trained safety operators. As key operational milestones are met, WeRide, AVOMO, and Uber plan to deploy hundreds of Robotaxis and introduce fully driverless services to Madrid's core urban areas.

The project builds on the pair's successful partnership in the Middle East, where they already operate fully driverless commercial services in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It also highlights WeRide's asset-light strategy: while the fleet utilizes WeRide's autonomous driving technology, daily operations will be managed by AVOMO, a company under the Moove Cars Group. AVOMO also serves as Uber's fleet operations partner in Atlanta and Austin, USA.

Madrid is considered one of Europe's most commercially promising Robotaxi markets, driven by strong mobility demand, a large population base, and a supportive policy environment. Back in May 2025, WeRide and Uber announced plans to deploy Robotaxi services in 15 new international cities over the following five years. With the Madrid project now underway, they have established operations in four cities, with the remaining 11 to be covered by 2030. Under their partnership roadmap, the companies aim to deploy tens of thousands of Robotaxis globally.
