Shanghai (Gasgoo)- At the Auto Shanghai 2021, Chinese AI solution provider Horizon Robotics showcased a Changan UNI-K SUV equipped with the advanced driver assistance and intelligent interaction systems built on its Journey 2 chip. It was the first time for both Horizon Robotics and Changan Automobile to demonstrate the autopilot function of the UNI-K to the public.

As the second production model of Changan Automobile's UNI premium car series, the UNI-K hit the market on March 28. By virtue of the image recognition technology, the vehicle's Journey 2-enabled autopilot system is able to detect and identify multiple traffic objects, such as lanes, vehicles and speed limit signs.

Powered by the Journey 2 chip as well, the smart interaction system is the key part of the UNI-K's intelligent cockpit that allows the passengers at the back row to control the vehicle with gestures.

The cooperation between Horizon Robotics and Changan Automobile can date back to 2018 when two companies jointly set up a lab for AI technology development. In 2020, the automaker launched the first production model of the UNI series, the UNI-T, which used the Journey 2-based NPU (Network Process Units) computing platform. As the first mass-produced model carrying the autonomous driving system riding on China’s self-developed chip, the UNI-T has so far gained a cumulative sales volume of over 100,000 units.

Horizon Robotics, serving as a Chinese leading provider of edge AI chips, boasts the advanced capabilities in designing AI algorithm and chips. The company launched in 2019 the Journey 2, which is known as China's first automotive-grade AI chip and has been put into volume production. The technology startup plans to roll out the Journey 5 this year and the Journey 5P next year, which boast AI computing power of 96 TOPS and 128 TOPS respectively.
