Shanghai, September 19 (Gasgoo.com) Guangzhou Honda will produce a new Honda sedan based on the existing City, reported Nanfang Daily today. The new City model will be powered by a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and will be similar in size to the Civic of Dongfeng Honda. The new model will have a new body shape compared to the current City.

Back in April this year Honda Motor Co. started to develop the new car based on the chassis of the City sedan. The City, built in Guangzhou Honda, is the sedan version of the Fit compact hatchback. "We call it the new generation of City internally, but the car will probably have a new name because it will have a completely new shape," says an engineer from Guangzhou Honda.

The new car will also have a bigger size than the City. "Its size will be similar to that of Civic," the engineer adds. It is still unknown when Guangzhou Honda will start to mass produce the new car, but a supplier source predicts that the new City’s sales will begin in 2009 and it is expected to be priced at roughly the same level of Civic. Dongfeng Honda sells its Civic for 150,000 yuan ($22,000) to 180,000 yuan.

The all-new 1.8L City is likely to fuel competition between Guangzhou Honda and Dongfeng Honda, and the CC (City+Civic) mix will rival the Toyota Corolla (made in Tianjin by FAW Toyota) in China's mid-class sedan market. The 1.8L City model will also help Guangzhou Honda get a slice of the 1.5L-2.0L car segment.
