China 2008 PV sales up 7.4% to 6.43 mln units
Retail sales of passenger vehicles in China, excluding exports, rose 7.4 pct to 6.43 mln units in 2008, the Union of National Passenger Cars Market Information said.
The industry association said output for the year grew 5.1 pct from a year earlier to 6.63 mln units.
In December, passenger vehicle sales rose 8.1 pct year-on-year to 644,028 units with output down 18 pct at 493,806 units.
Volkswagen's two joint ventures in China, FAW VW and Shanghai VW, and General Motors' Shanghai GM led the sales rankings in 2008, selling 512,973, 501,018 and 445,709 units respectively.
The Union of National Passenger Cars Market Information said it is not optimistic on the outlook for passenger vehicle market this year, considering the in exports and weak domestic demand.
