Shanghai, March 30 (Gasgoo.com) US automaker General Motors Corp. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner will be stepping down immediately at the request of the White House, administration officials said Sunday, AP reported.

The news comes as President Barack Obama prepares to unveil additional restructuring efforts made to save the U.S. domestic auto industry.

Wagoner joined GM in 1977, serving in several capacities in the U.S., Brazil and Europe. He became president and chief executive in 2000 and has served as chairman and CEO since May 2003.

General Motors announced early Monday that it had named Fritz Henderson as its new chief executive officer, replacing departing Rick Wagoner.

"Fritz Henderson, GM president and chief operating officer, will serve as CEO," the automaker said in a short announcement.

Henderson, 50, was named to his current position in 2008. Previously he was vice chairman and chief financial officer.

In an email statement to Gasgoo.com today, a PR executive of GM China said that the change in the top management of its U.S. headquarters will not influence GM's Chinese operation, which is running smoothly as usual.
