Does Sabb have much of anything to offer Geely?
"Geely has submitted a bid for GM's Saab", says the headline in today's Gasgoo news channel, citing a Wall Street Journal report.
Given that Geely is also contacting with Ford Motors' Volvo unit on a possible bid, the report said its bid for Saab could be designed to pressure Ford into looking more seriously at its bid for Volvo.
Another theory was that the Geely's Saab bid could be an attempt to hedge its bets and increase its chances of gaining stakes in at least one foreign automobile brand if the Volvo deal falls through, the Journal said.
Whatsoever, Geely may not get much help from such a deal. What does Saab have that could be all that valuable? Its design and engineering capabilities have been crippled by GM. Its branding has been heavily diluted.
Meanwhile Volvo has been making a loss for years. Even Ford failed to make a profit with the European luxury brand, how can I expect Geely to come out with some innovative strategies to make it alive. Not to say the cost pressures Geely will face after such an acquisition.
I'd like to see both Volvo and Sabb survive, but I have to know if they have much of anything to offer Geely.
An old Sabb car was parked at the street of Northern Ireland. GM has
decided to cut ties with Saab brand by Jan. 1, 2010.
