New GM needs new models and global products to proper

Critics are arguing that whether the new GM, which completed exit from bankruptcy protection on July 10 with ambitions of making money and building cars people are eager to buy, have enough new introductions to lure customers.

The answer to this question is no.

The only new vehicle model slated for launch from now on until early 2010 is the Chevrolet Cruze compact car, Bloomberg reported, citing Grand Rapids Michigan-based auto analyst Erich Merkle.

"One product, for a company the size of General Motors with its market share, quite honestly isn't enough," he said. "Their market-share results will go lower as a result of very poor product cadence. That's what happens in bankruptcy. A lot of these products are being canceled or delayed."

Drew Winter, a commentator from WardsAuto.com, said the problem is that GM lack of truly global products and brands, while Honda and Toyota can build most of their products in any factory they choose, in any corner of the globe, to meet changing market conditions.

But he admits that GM has been making efforts in developing common global architectures and building new assembly plants standardized machinery and layouts in recent years and the Chevy Cruze small car is a model to mark that direction.

No doubt if it succeeds, it may lead GM into a new era of prosperity.
