Australia new vehicle sales fall back in July
New vehicle sales in Australia sagged in July, a pullback from a very strong June when demand was lifted by financial year-end sales and government tax breaks on new cars for small business.
The Australian Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries said vehicle sales were down 26.8 percent in original terms, compared to June, to be 10.3 percent below July last year. Seasonally adjusted, sales fell 10 percent in July, from June.
Sales had surged 36 percent in June, when vehicle demand is typically strong as dealers cut prices to clear stock for the end of the financial year. The Labor government also raised the tax break for small businesses buying new vehicles to 50 percent, from 30 percent.
Sales for the year to July were running 15.3 percent behind the same period in 2008.
Toyota Motor Corp. again took top sales position in July, with a share of 22.1 percent. The Holden unit of General Motors Corp took second spot with 13.6 percent. Ford Motor Co. took 10.3 percent, while Mazda grabbed 8.0 percent.
