Shanghai, January 21 (Gasgoo.com) Changan Auto is set to launch its first self-developed compact car Benben Mini in March, media reported. It will be priced between 35,000 yuan ($5,130) and 50,000 yuan.

Based on the company's best-selling first-generation Benben model, which appeared to be a chunky but useable car, the Benben Mini has an entirely new door line, rear end and has been given a cuter front end, according to the China Car Times.

The Benben Mini, called "Chinese Alto" since its display at the 2009 Guangzhou auto show,  will compete with the BYD F0 and Brilliance FRV which have started to dominate the small-car segment in the Chinese auto market.

Sources said the Benben Mini rolled off the production line at Changan Auto's Yubei plant in early December and its launch was delayed from January to March. It will be released in Chengdu, capital of southwestern Sichuan province.

The latest car from Changan will be a compact MPV that is designed in the same language as the smaller 2010 Benben Mini car and is set for launch in the first quarter alongside the reinvented Benben.

This new MPV will likely rival Jianghuai Auto Co (JAC)'s new MPV which has proved to be popular with consumers since its launch earlier this year.
