Shanghai September 7 (Gasgoo.com) BYD Co. (1211.HK), the Chinese car and battery maker, said today that its August sales dropped 5.9% from previous month and 19% from a year earlier due to intense competition and the slowdown in China's automotive market, Reuters reported.

The company, 10% owned by Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N), said in an email to Reuters that it sold 31,069 vehicles in August, and 353,000 vehicles in the first eight months of this year, up 43.4% year on year.

The figures in January to August are equivalent to 59% of BYD's full-year sales target of 600,000 units for 2010.
