Audi develops electric car in new Chinese lab

From The Hindu Business Line| November 01 , 2010 10:15 BJT

German high-end car manufacturer Audi said on Saturday it had teamed up with a Chinese university to develop an electric-powered car code-named the Audi A6L. It said Chinese Economy Minister Wan Gang had attended the opening Saturday of the joint research centre at Tonji University in Shanghai. A spokeswoman at Audi's main office in Ingolstadt said the press release was issued simultaneously in China and in Germany.

The car to be designed at the Audi Tonji Joint Lab will be an adaptation of the A6 sedan which Audi already produces at its plant in Changchun, China. Chinese buyers are able to opt for a stretched version of the A6 for chauffeur-driven owners who need more legroom.

Other models made at the site are the Q5 and A4. Audi is a brand within Germany's Volkswagen Group.
