Russian car sales up 40% year-on-year in June

Reuters (Moscow) - Russian car sales rose 40 percent year-on-year in June after increasing by 48 percent in May, the Association of European Businesses said on Friday.

In the period from January to June the Russian car market expanded by 56 percent in year-on-year terms.

"Growth for the first half of 2011 of 56 percent shows that the recovery of the Russian market is now well established and is tracking ahead of our latest forecast of 2.35 million units for the full year," said David Thomas, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee.

1.91 million cars were sold last year.

Russian car sales halved in 2009 after consumers put off making new purchases and access to credit all but dried up.
