Hyundai Kia denies claims that US fuel mileage controversy will spill into China

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai November 20) - Current allegations that Hyundais and Kias in North America boasted exaggerated fuel consumption rates will not affect vehicles sold in China, the Beijing Morning Post reported today, citing a statement made by Hyundai Kia's Chinese branch. According to an official explanation, even though several of the affected models are sold in both markets, the way fuel standards are measured in China means that there will be no such problem in the country.

The issue, which has seen Hyundai spend nearly $100 million to fix and instigated calls for Congressional hearings, was brought on by owner complaints that their vehicles were failing to match up to supposed MPG figures. Soon after, the Environmental Protection Agency revised MPG estimates on the vehicles. The Korean manufacturer also found itself having the compensate owners. The issue reportedly affected 900,000 vehicles in the US, 172,000 in Canada and 28,000 in other North American countries.
