Geely Chairman Li Shufu calls for stricter air quality standards in China

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai March 6) - As the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and National People's Congress prepare to meet later this month, Geely Automobile Chairman and CPPCC Member Li Shufu has announced new proposals for boosting environmental standards. According to a report appearing in the Beijing Youth Daily today, Mr. Li has one proposal advocating the introduction of stricter standards governing air quality, and another regarding the establishment of a unified system for the taxi industry.

Mr. Li (pictured) has been a key figure in the debate for more stringent environmental standards in China for the last seven to eight years. He has already proposed a set of air quality standards for automobile interiors last year. This year, he will be focusing his efforts on general air pollution. He believes that poor air quality is the chief culprit behind a lot of problems in China, and it can't be solved by the efforts of a few municipal governments. Mr. Li recommends that the country's current Environmental Protection Law be reevaluated to ensure there are no loopholes or other areas of concern. Mr. Li is also a proponent of emissions trading as a method to reduce the total amount of carbon emissions in the country.

Meanwhile, Mr. Li also has concerns about the country's taxi industry. He advocates the establishment of strict, universal standards for the industry based on observations of taxi markets both inside and outside of China. The standards should aim to promote the development and sales of environmentally friendly taxis, as well as encourage more diversity in the taxi industry.

Mr. Li also has a proposal for tax reform that he plans to submit.
