India June Car Sales Fall 9%

Local car sales in India fell 9% to 139,632 units in June from a year earlier, data issued Friday by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed.

Sales in the three months ended June 30 declined 10% from the same period a year earlier to 434,551 automobiles.

SIAM, the lobby group of auto makers in India, didn't give an immediate reason for the decline.

Car sales in India have been affected by high ownership costs and slowing economic growth.

Automobile sales in India are considered a key indicator of the health of the economy.
