Shanghai. September 6 (Gasgoo.com) – China’s total number of vehicles in use will reach 130-150 million by 2020, which will consume 55 percent of China’s total oil consumption, China’s Minister of Science and Technology said recently.
On a “home-grown brand cars development strategy” conference, Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology said automobiles will burn 248 million tons of oil, or about 55 percent of China’s total consumption by 2020.
“Clean and alternative fuel-powered vehicles represents the future direction of our automotive industry,” Wan told the conference. “Besides cost and environmental factors, we have to reduce our reliance on oil imports.”
Official statistics show that over the past 20 years, China’s oil consumption has been growing 5 percent annually and one third of China’s oil imports are used to power automobiles.
In comparison with developed countries, China’s oil efficiency in automobiles is much lower. Experts say that to cover the same distance, Chinese vehicles burn 25 percent more oil than those in Europe, 20 percent more than Japan and 10 percent more than the United States.
Chinese government officials say Chinese vehicles will be able to meet European environmental standards and American fuel efficiency standards in the next five to ten years.
