Shanghai. October 12 (Gasgoo.com)-Swedish bus and heavy trucks maker Scania is planning to explore the Chinese market by offering ethanol buses for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, as state media Xinhua agency reported.

"The environmental concerns have received much more attentions from the Chinese authorities than it did just a couple of years ago," said Leif Ostling, president and chief executive officer of Scania. He added that it would be a great opportunity for Scania to explore the Chinese market, where the company currently has no manufacturing operations.

Under the company's plan, the first Scania ethanol bus will make a trial run earlier next month in Beijing. As part of China's green Olympic drive, the efforts to curb vehicles emission have become intensified. But it's not clear how many such buses from Scania could run on the streets in Beijing in August 2008 when the Olympic Games are held.

The company says the upcoming ethanol bus meets Euro V standards, improves fuel economy and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 90%. And there is almost no emission of particles or hydrocarbons.

Ostling said the company “hopes to set up a wholly owned subsidiary, instead of cooperation with local manufacturers”.
