Shanghai, November 30, (Gasgoo.com)-Beijing will introduce the EU IV emission standards next year on the eve of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. the city’s environmental protection officials said.

As of January 1, 2008, gas stations in Beijing will offer EU-IV-standard fuels, announced Du Shaozhong, deputy chief of Beijing's environmental protection agency.

New vehicles that do not meet the EU IV standard will not be allowed to be sold in Beijing after the EU-IV policy deadline, which the government says will come before the Olympic Game, but it has not set a specific date. However old cars that were purchased before the EU-IV deadline won't be affected.

The strict standards will surely improve Beijing's infamous air quality; however for those automakers that cannot meet this standard, the new policy will be a heavy blow.

Currently only some middle and upper-end car models produced by joint venture automaker can meet this standard, whereas the bulk of China's local brand vehicles can not. Some of Chery–made cars, like Ruilin R2, A113 and QQ613, can meet this standard, according to Beijing Environment Protection Agency.

Experts estimate that at least 30 percent vehicles running on the streets of Beijing do not meet the mandatory EU IV standards. Tianjin FAW Xiali, a subsidiary of China's biggest auto making group FAW, may lose the Beijing market as most of its vehicles do not  meet this standard.

However, other automakers see EU-IV standards as an opportunity to take a bigger share of  the world's second largest automobile market.

"Our new car models like Peri and Cowry that will hit the market have already met the new standards," said Shuang Yugui, spokesman of Great Wall Motor.

"We want to compete with other automaker under the stricter environment rules," said Li Shufu, chairman and founder of Geely Automobile, China's second largest local brand automaker.
