Shanghai. January 14 (Gasgoo.com) - Chrysler LLC entered a relationship with Nissan Motor Co last Friday for Nissan to supply Chrysler with small cars, but the deal will not impact Chery's ongoing cooperation talks with Chrysler, Shanghai Securities Journal, citing a Chery official, reported today.
"Chrylser already sent a team of engineers and staff to Chery months ago, and they have begun to work with us together to improve product quality. It’s impossible that its cooperation with Nissan will have any impact on our partnership", said Jin Gebo, the director of Chery's administrative office.
Chrysler executives also said on Friday that they're planning to step up their efforts with Chery and have hopes of bringing a Chinese-made small car to market by no later than early next year, though they did not specify which market. Besides, Chrysler has informed Chery of its tie up with Nissan in advance.
Detroit Free Press reported that Chrysler plans to sell a version of Nissan's Versa sedan under a yet-to-be-announced Chrysler brand in South America beginning in 2009. The companies did not disclose how many vehicles the deal would entail or the deal's finances.
Chrysler signed a deal with Chery to manufacture small cars in China to export to the United States and other markets, and it is still working out details of an agreement for Chery to build a subcompact that meets international safety and emission standards.
Chrysler Vice Chairman Tom LaSorda said Chrysler has more than 150 engineers and procurement workers in China and that the number probably will double during the next 18 months. He said Chrysler is still a few years away from offering Chery-made small cars in North America.
