Shanghai. February 21 (Gasgoo.com) – In response to a media report ona joint venture program with Chrysler, a Chery official said the cooperation with Chrysler is still a long-term possibility, but not part of its short term plans, Reuters reported yesterday.
Earlier this week, Shanghai Securities News reported that the negotiations over a joint venture program between Chrysler and Chery is progressing smoothly and the pair is expected to reach an agreement shortly.
However, Chery official's comments on the joint venture are out of line with the Shanghai Security News report. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Chrysler said that the two firms are moving forward with plans to export vehicles from China to other world markets, although this will only take place once Chrysler is convinced that the cars will meet global standards.
Last June, a contract manufacturing agreement was reached between Chrysler and Chery. Under the agreement, Chery will build small vehicles under Chrysler-brand nameplates and exported these vehicles to the United States. However, there is no ensuing timetable or an action since the agreement was reached.
"In fact, our negotiations with Chrysler have been on and off over the past half year. Chrysler's new CEO has finally decided to choose Chery for a joint venture program after a partnership seeking tour across the world."
Chery's deputy general manager, Jin Ge, said Chrysler had sent a group of technicians to help Chery raise technical standards. "Chrysler has not given up on Chery; they are here to help us raise technological contents," Jin said.
The Chrysler, Chery joint venture will be located near Chery's headquarters in Wuhu, according to sources familiar with the Chrysler-Chery talks. "The joint venture might plan to build a compact vehicle smaller and cheaper than Dodge Neon."
