Latest statistics: China has over 100 million car drivers

Shanghai, April 7 (Gasgoo.com) China had 159,777,589 motor vehicles by the end of 2007, including 56,967,765 cars, 87,096,613 motorcycles, and 869,124 trailers. There were 163,887,372 drivers of motor vehicles and riders of motorcycles, including 107,087,137 car drivers. The number of motor vehicles in the country last year increased by 14,548,595 units, or 10.2%, over 2006, according to the Chinese government’s latest statistics.

The number of China's private motor vehicles continued to grow in 2007. Private motor vehicles across the country numbered 121,571,500 last year, an increase of 11,965,532 units, or 10.92%, over 2006. The number of private cars stood at 35,337,531 units, representing 62.03% of all the cars in 2007 in the country. There were 15,217,911 private sedans, accounting for 77.73% of all the sedans that country had last year.

The number of motorcycles in 2007 also increased by 13,765,300 units, or 9.17%, over the previous year to reach 163,887,372 units.

China is the world's second-largest auto market, behind the United States, with about 8.5 million vehicles sold last year. Overseas car makers are flocking to bring fuel-efficient vehicles to China to compete in this rapidly growing market.
