From Associated Press| April 22 , 2008 10:51 BJT

Daimler AG says it plans to start selling the Smart fortwo micro car in China in mid-2009.

The announcement on Saturday from Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche was being made at the Beijing auto show. The tiny, two-seater fortwo is currently available in 37 countries, including the United States.

Zetsche says in a statement that the Smart brand has good sales potential for China because of demand for small cars in the market.

Smart is a division of Daimler's Mercedes-Benz brand.
