Auto companies donate $21 mln for quake relief

Shanghai, May 15 (Gasgoo.com) Up to 10 a.m. today, donations by automakers to the quake-hit areas had risen to 150 million yuan ($21.4 million), according to a report compiled by sina.com.

Five Chinese automakers and auto-related companies each donated 10 million yuan or more, including BYD Automobile Co, Geely Automobile, Dong Feng Motor Co, SAIC and its related joint ventures and China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC). 

Many other joint venture automakers that have donated more than 10 million yuan include FAW Toyota, Hyundai Kia and Guangzhou Toyota.

Donations in both cash and goods from other enterprises, local government and individuals amounted to 877 million yuan till 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Xinhua reports.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake centering on Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, occurred on Monday afternoon and affected many parts of the country.

The death toll from the powerful earthquake was 14,866 by 2 p.m. Wednesday and is still rising.
