Guangzhou Toyota aims to sell 35,000 Yaris vehicles this year in the Chinese market. Considering the impact of the Sichuan earthquake on China's auto industry, this sales target seems not so easy to achieve. The car-making joint venture canceled the Yaris rollout ceremony scheduled for the end of May and the money (about 2 million yuan) earmarked for the event was donated to the quake relief.

Toyota Yaris, a popular compact to rival Mazda 2, VW Polo, Chevrolet Aveo, Honda Fit/Jazz, Suzuki SX4 and Ford Fiesta, started production in Guangzhou Toyota in May. Yaris' sister model, Toyota Vios produced at FAW-Toyota, will be launched in China this year to compete with Yaris as well. Price is likely to decide whether Yaris will be a good seller as Toyota Camry in this fast-growing but competitive China market.

The compact hatchback to be launched in the Chinese market soon will come in two versions based: a 1.3L engine and a 1.5L engine. And the model will be priced at a range of 85,000 yuan to 120,000 yuan.

The new Toyota Yaris has achieved best safety performance in the Euro NCAP safety tests, with a 5 star safety rating and 35 points for adult protection. Toyota Yaris also meets the stringent Euro IV emission standards.
