China SUV imports surged 50% in Jan-April

Shanghai, June 19 (Gasgoo.com) Despite the rising fuel prices all over the world, China continues to see a tremendous boost in sales of fuel guzzling SUV vehicles.

Data collected by China Trading Center for Automobile Import (CTCAI) showed that the SUV imports surged 50% in the first four months of this year. Imports of all range of vehicles surged 59.1% year-on-year to 171,000 units.

Actually the number of imported SUVs has overtaken that of sedans as early as in 2007. Also, import of SUVs of 2.5L and above accounted for 82% of the total number of imported SUVs in the first two months of this year, according to CTCAI.

In a separate report compiled by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, SUV sales in the first five months of this year climbed by 39.72% amid an average growth rate of 17.41 for passenger cars.
